Legend:
DeSoto's war dogs tamed by native peoples interbred with the Red Wolf, producing a spotted hybrid with glass eyes which was found primarily in the region around Catahoula Lake in central Louisiana, living with the natives. The word 'Catahoula' is actually a combination of two Choctaw words 'okhata', meaning lake, and 'hullo', meaning beloved.

  • Catahoulas are not currently registered with the AKC
